Information Technology Video Training
This page has been created to present and store Computer Based Video training developed for our visitors.
Many IT professionals use video training to advance their knowledge, it is a reasonably economic way of upskilling. In order to maximise the effectiveness of your training our staff have developed the following approach to complement the information delivered by CBT.
Recommended Approach to Learning and Certifications
1. Video training is an outstanding source of theory and sample configurations. I also found that I retain more by watching the videos 2 times each (approximately 1 week between viewings) simply because there is so much information in them that it is difficult to catch everything first time.
Advantages: Video training may set you back several hundred dollars but that is relatively inexpensive when compared to the cost of attending a class.
Video can be replayed over and over if a refresher is required.
Classes can be taken at your own pace.
Disadvantages: Cannot ask questions, seek clarification or ask for elaboration.
Certification blueprints often change so the video may become less relevant over time.
2. Read a book. After watching the videos I normally read the certification book once. I find that the book reinforces my new found knowledge and adds a different perspective to the material.
Advantages: Cost effective way of acquiring knowledge.
Excellent reference material.
Portable and can be read on public transport or during breaks.
Disadvantages: Many technical IT books do not do themselves justice. I know of many beginners who glaze over material without understanding it simply because some basic concepts are not clearly explained in the beginning.
Requires a motivated reader because the material can be dry.
3. Practice on equipment. This step is crucial, it ties together all the theory and really tests whether you have retained your knowledge. I have found from personal experience that this step introduces a whole bunch of new questions.
Advantages: Outstanding way of acquiring knowledge and experience.
Can test and see real results.
Practicing is the best way to ensure you understand the theory.
Disadvantages: Can be expensive to set up and maintain.
4. Watch the videos again. I found that with the additional clarity from practicing on the equipment I am able to relate and pick up even more detail. Not to mention answering remaining question from my time on the equipment.
5. Practice exam. I must admit I only used a practice exam for one of the four CCNP exams. The reason for that was that I was budgeting and I felt like I had all the topics covered. I did find that the practice exams not only helped me to validate my knowledge, but they also help me to become accustom to the way that the vendor writes questions. During the real exam sometimes it was difficult to understand what they wanted to know by the way they worded the questions and similarities between multiple choice answers. So from that perspective the practice exam helped a lot.
Advantages: Excellent way to test "where you are at" in terms of readiness for an exam.
Excellent way to double check you really understand the theory.
Disadvantages: May give you a false sense of security if you are regurgitating exam answers rather than understanding the answer.
