Dear Mr Pyle,
I am writing in response to the opening for the Database Administrator role advertised in the IT Pathways Times on 27 March, 2010.
As requested, I have over three years of Database Administration experience managing highly available Oracle and MySQL mission critical database clusters. Some key achievements that are relevant to this application include my design and implementation of a database performance monitoring system that records and graphs database transaction times on end user requests. The output from this monitoring has led to a number of design activities that have produced performance improvements of up to 25%.
In addition to this experience I have completed in-house Database Security courses as well as the Oracle OCA certification. Please note that this training also included a transaction performance metrics module that appears highly relevant to this advertised role.
I hold a Bachelors Degree in Information Technology and am available for international travel twice a year as requested in the job advertisement.
Please find attached my resume for your perusal. I would welcome the chance to speak with you at your convenience regarding this role.
Sincerely,
Job Candidate

Database Administrator Cover Letter
In the example below the candidate provides a simple and well directed response to the job advertisement. Every piece of real estate is well utilized - there are no 'flowery fluffy' bits announcing highly developed skills in all manner of technology. His vendor specific skills are well described as he responds to the criteria in the advertised job.
Database administration jobs are about the integrity and safe keeping of information. And good candidates are applicants that can present themselves to be reliable custodians of this information. Knowledge of synchronous and asynchronous replication, backup strategies and recovery (RTO - Recovery Time Objective) as well as (RPO - Recovery Point Objectives) may be important to the employer in addition to standard duties.
Performance is also an important aspect of database administration and therefore knowledge of server hardware and database vendors such as Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Sybase, DB2 or other may also be expected.
