You might think that an IT cover letter is of little importance. Your talent and skill will suffice in order to get the job. To some extent you are right, but before the company takes a personal test of your talent and skill, it is your cover letter that tells them what you are capable of.
There is no such thing as a generic Information Technology cover letter. Each field requires different levels of technical and business jargon. This balance also varies according to the seniority of the advertised position. Generally speaking, the more senior roles require a deeper understanding of business processes as they relate to the field in question.
For example, a senior network engineer may also need to address change management and design consideration criteria as opposed to a junior network engineer who may only need to demonstrate technical knowledge.
Research shows that recruiters found over 80% of applications had suffciently serious errors in grammar, spelling and structure to warrant discarding the entire job application. This demonstrates why a well structured Cover Letter can help you to reach the short list for an interview.
In my opinion, however, the single most important task of a cover letter is to address the specific criteria listed in the job advertisement. An employer is looking for specific skills, by addressing the job criteria your are aligning yourself to the skills that the employer is searching for and therefore giving yourself the best opportunitiy to progress in the job application process.
We have heaps of examples of how to achieve this both in our cover letter samples and our articles. Check them out in the content table above.
