Toward the Future - The Link Between Career and Technology

As the 21st century rolls on the link between careers and technology tightens. Once upon a time technologically challenged workers could avoid the digital age by avoiding office jobs. But today almost every industry partakes in significant technology spend for business benefit.

According to gartner.com, in 2010 the global IT spend was US$3.428 trillion, in 2011 that figure increased to US$3.664 trillion and in 2012 it is expected to total US$3.983 trillion. *1

So what does that mean for IT career prospects?

Whilst Information Technology professionals were traditionally geeky mathematicians who were custodian to digital toys, modern industry professionals are more likely to be well rounded and business savvy. In the IT industry, ties between job security, salaries and the business benefit of Information Systems have steadily tightened. In 2012, strengthened by the GFC, the profile of the well rounded IT professional seems to be more prominent than ever. Research into advertised jobs shows that demand for personal traits such as excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills are just as common as technical skills.

When it comes to the demand for skilled professionals, our own research on IT salaries shows that 3% of Information Technology roles pay less than US$50K per year, 29% pay between US$50K - US$100K and 68% of jobs pay US$100K or greater. This research was performed on a sample size of 188 technology jobs advertised in USA and Australia.

Interestingly, when looking at a larger sample size of 958 Information Technology jobs accross many IT fields, an analysis on the most common keywords shows that the word 'experience' is the most common followed by the word 'years' with the word 'skills' in third place. These statistics alone tell a story about employer's mindset when it comes to the custodians of their Information Systems.

This fact, together with the aforementioned salary ranges as well as the increasing  trillion dollar global IT spend suggest that information systems are highly regarded in businesses accross many industries. It stands to reason, that if information systems are becoming increasingly important to world business then so are their custodians.
